We also now have compelling evidence to highlight just how important physical activity is for those living with and beyond cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While patients were previously told to rest during cancer treatment, the overwhelming body of evidence now shows that physical activity is\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30549018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safe and beneficial<\/a>\u202fthroughout cancer treatment and beyond. Many patients with cancer avoid physical activity as they\u2019re unsure of what is safe for them to do. But the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240015128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u4e16\u754c\u536b\u751f\u7ec4\u7ec7<\/a>\u202frecommends that adult cancer patients should aim to complete 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week that raises the heart rate. It also recommends that patients aim to do muscle strengthening exercises (such as weightlifting or yoga) at least twice a week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Physical activity during and after treatment can:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-support-mental-health-1\">1. Support mental health<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">A cancer diagnosis can be extremely emotional, and patients may feel uncertainty and fear regarding their diagnosis and treatment, leading to increased feelings of\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19581224\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anxiety and depression, alongside reduced quality of life<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But many studies have shown that physical activity during and after cancer treatment can help manage these\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22895974\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mental health struggles<\/a>, alongside improving patients\u2019\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26275768\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">self-esteem and overall mood<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8576825\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise<\/a>\u202f(such as brisk walking) two to three times a week, combined with muscle strengthening exercise (such as Pilates or weightlifting), has been shown to significantly reduce anxiety and depression in people suffering with many different types of cancer, including breast, prostate, colorectal, gynaecological and lung cancer.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-reduce-feelings-of-fatigue-2\">2. Reduce feelings of fatigue<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fatigue is one of the most\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/oncolo\/article\/12\/S1\/4\/6395717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">frequently reported side effects<\/a>\u202fassociated with cancer and its treatment. It can impact a cancer patient\u2019s daily life and their\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/1097-0142%2820010915%2992%3A6%20%3C1699%3A%3AAID-CNCR1500%3E3.0.CO%3B2-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">physical, emotional and mental wellbeing<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research shows that regular physical activity can help\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8576825\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce feelings of fatigue<\/a>. Help patients to cope with treatment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many studies have shown that patients with cancer who are able to tolerate their prescribed dose of chemotherapy have better outcomes. However, the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.6004\/jnccn.2009.0009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dose of chemotherapy<\/a>\u202fpatients receive is often reduced due to a range of treatment-related side-effects and complications they experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encouragingly, emerging evidence suggests that breast cancer patients who completed\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17785708\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">muscle-strengthening<\/a>\u202for a combination of both\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25918291\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities<\/a>\u202fduring treatment were less likely to need reductions to their prescribed dose of chemotherapy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-prevent-hospitalization-4\">4. Prevent hospitalization<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:44% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/ispah.tecology-hosting.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vz0rbclzg_w.jpg\" alt=\"\u953b\u70bc\u8005\" class=\"wp-image-35394 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ispah.tecology-hosting.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vz0rbclzg_w.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/ispah.tecology-hosting.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/vz0rbclzg_w-960x640.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treatment for cancer, including surgery and chemotherapy, can lead to complications for some people, which may require hospitalization, but research suggests that for patients with breast cancer, physical activity can lower the risk of hospitalization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers found that patients who completed a combination of strength and interval training during treatment had a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6964125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3% lower incidence of hospitalization<\/a>\u202fcompared to those who were physically inactive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-reduce-risk-of-cancer-returning-and-improve-survival-5\">5. Reduce risk of cancer returning and improve survival<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A systematic review of physical activity among those with cancer found that higher physical activity levels were associated with a reduced risk of cancer returning, and improved survival by\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31095082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to 50%<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Further guidance on being active following cancer can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macmillan.org.uk\/cancer-information-and-support\/stories-and-media\/booklets\/physical-activity-and-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u8fd9\u91cc<\/a>.
